Handmade in NC – Crafty Ginger Mama

Today on Handmade in NC, I bring you Raleigh’s local sewing sensation, Jennifer Marks. Jen’s Etsy shop is aptly named Crafty Ginger Mama. She is crafty in a clever way, not in a cyclone hit AC Moore kind of way. I had been admiring Jen from afar on the school playground. Ou paths crossed on Twitter, and we became friends from there. It’s a crazy world, folks. Jen has a really great sense of style, blending yoga wear and street wear, all while staying warm. It came as no surprise that Jen’s funky design sensibilities transfers to her craftiness.

I imagine Jen’s old Singer is her fifth appendage. She uses one similar to the one her mother and grandmother used, carrying on the legacy of home sewn doll clothes, dresses for little girls, Halloween costumes…you get the point. Jen whips up tablet cases, coffee sleeves, stockings, ornaments, and more. She uses fabric from the amazing Spoonflower…you must check it out! Jen’s line of Dr. Who holiday goodies is sure to make you swoon. Um, Happy Wholidays? Cough Cough.

Geeks, behold!

Jen uses e-textiles in the ornaments to make them glow. My mouth hung agape when I first saw these wearable, washable LEDs. I mean, really. Too cool. In Jen’s words, “Thanks to Spoonflower I’ve been able to have fabric printed with geeky and devotional icons alike, and then create soft, light-up ornaments and stockings.”

If you don’t find Jen chasing after her kids or running fabric through her sewing machine, you’ll find her knotted up in some fantastic pretzel like yoga pose. “Yoga has been a path to spirituality for me, so while my ‘religious’ ornaments are absolutely kitschy and a bit campy, they are also made with devotion and love,” she tells me. Jen is donating $5 from the sale of each spiritually-oriented ornament to the Ashram where she studies. Now that’s the spirit of the season.

    years. Wonderful stuff, just great!
