Flatout Good & Easy

Ilinap · December 13, 2012 ·

I love a party. Our house somehow always turns into party central, whether it’s a planned dinner party affair or an impromptu fireside gathering. My mom’s house has always been the same way so I suppose I come by it naturally. The holidays leave us all dazed, but it’s nice to take time to connect with dear friends in a social setting with no pressure. By pressure I mean no gifts, no small talk, no gut sucking undergarments.
Mac Daddy and I invited over some friends for some good ole yuletide movie watching. Four kids nestled under blankets to watch Christmas movies on our obnoxiously large television. I made flatbread pizzas, courtesy of Flatout.
A good pizza begins with the sauce. Homemade is the way to go, and our friends are worth it. Plus, the leftover sauce can be repurposed in umpteen ways!
The best thing about the Flatout flatbread is its ease of use. I laid out ingredients and let everyone go to town. We did have to ration Bird on the pepperoni. And Lark, our poor hungry dog, didn’t even score a dropped little bite.

The whole wheat Flatout was the crowd favorite.
One can never have too much cheese. I might have added a tish more to my pizza.
Dinner is served. From now on when we kiss the cheeks of Triumph we are going to yell PIZZAH instead of HUZZAH!
It’s a shame the kids didn’t like the Flatout pizzas.
I’m  not here to tell you that Flatout replaces good ole yeast rising dough perfected by Jennie. The world is big enough for all sorts of pizza. But I do love the versatility and convenience of Flatout. Here are some ideas I tried and loved:
  • The boys and I had a fast dinner one night that was way better than take out. We spread some tapenade on the Spicy Italian Flatout and topped it with freshly grated parmesan. After a few minutes in the oven and accompanied by some fruit and an arugula salad with nothing but lemon juice and olive oil, dinner was served. For the record, Bird and Deal each ate a whole pizza and split a second. How on earth will we feed them when they are teenagers?!
  • One day Deal wanted tapenade and crackers. We clearly have a thing for tapenade around here. I have said before that we eat more olives than any household in America. Our pantry only had graham crackers so I cut a white Flatout into cracker sizes and baked the pieces on a cookie sheet until they were somewhat crispy. Perfection.
  • Mac Daddy used the Flatout like a tortilla. He cut one in half, spread on some dijon mustard, rolled up some meat and cheese, and voila, a nice break from sliced bread in the boys’ lunchboxes.

We’re hosting a pretty big shindig soon so I’ll stock up on some Flatout flatbreads. Some hummus spread on the flatbread and sprinkled with black olives (not from a can!), zaatar, and olive oil would be tasty. I think the possibilities are endless. Pizzah!
