Prince. Not William.

Ilinap · March 24, 2011 ·

I’m one degree of separation from Prince, the artist formerly known as the hieroglyph.

Mac Daddy and I used to work with a guy who graduated from high school with the one and only Prince Rogers Nelson. We saw Prince in concert last night. Finally. Minneapolis is Prince’s home and his history. It’s the city where Mac Daddy and I met and became friends. I’m pretty sure growing up there is what inspired the song Sometimes It Snows in April. All those years in Minneapolis dancing at his club First Avenue and we never had a run in with Prince. It was reported that he’d sneak in and play a set for the crowd in an intimate venue. A venue with the grossest bathrooms on the planet, but you learn to exercise bladder control. Um, not to be confused with Prince’s hit Pu$$y Control (don’t click play on that link if you have little ones or your boss or mother in law in the room). I think that’s something different.

The show last night was fantastic. Prince is one of the rare singers who sounds the same in a live performance as he does on the radio. His musical talent is mind numbing. His dance moves are plain hawt. And don’t think I didn’t covet his sparkly red boots. Also his abs. Hard to believe a 53 year old man can be so sexy. But really, to experience his talent will do that to you. Dayum.

The Poetry of Prince

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
to get through this thing called life

Life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop
Dig it

Touch if you will my stomach
Feel how it trembles inside
You’ve got the butterflies all tied up
Don’t make me chase you

Even doves have pride

Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing
It’s time we all reach out for something new
That means you too
You say you want a leader
But you can’t seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party, and parties weren’t meant to last
War is all around us, my mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die I’m gonna listen to my body tonight

If I gave you diamonds and pearls
Would you be a happy boy or a girl
If I could I would give you the world
All I can do is just offer you my love

There ain’t no other
That can do the things that I’ll do to you
And I get discouraged
’cause you treat me just like a child
And they say I’m so shy, yeah
But with you I just go wild!

Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your…Kiss

And for your listening pleasure, my other favorite Prince song. Not for the weak of heart, even though this is the clean version. If this doesn’t get you shakin’ it up, nothing will.
