Musings and Observations

Ilinap · November 27, 2018 ·

In no particular order…

Ladies of all ages, stop doing the sorority squat in photos. Stand up tall and own your badass self. Shuffle tall people to back and stand up straight. No. More. Hands. On. Bent. Knees. Stop it.

Non-profit boards need diversity. It’s awful to see all white boards with no representation. It’s especially bad when the organization serves marginalized communities. White savior complex manifests itself in many ways. Doing good and giving are key tenets to living your best life, but the how is as important as the why.

Progressive people can be racist. Racism is more than lynchings and slurs. Just because people vote Democratic, doesn’t mean they’re not capable of racist behavior. It’s heartbreaking but true. Intent and byproduct get muddled here.

I have a lot of questions for women who uphold and defend the patriarchy. Who are these women who vote against equal pay?

And the why might the Violence Against Women Act expire? So we’re sending the Handmaid’s Tale message that violence against women is OK?

Can we stop talking about commemorating women’s right to vote unless we are also including the fight for women of color to vote? We can’t keep whitewashing the narrative. Just because we don’t teach it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Micro-aggressions are real. Let me tell you about all the times people tell me I “speak really good English.” Or that I’m actually American and not seen as brown, said as if it’s a compliment. Pay attention. Call out that crap.

A little of a good thing is better than none. This goes for chocolate cake and exercise.
