A Christmas Rant

All this Christmas stress is self-imposed. Are people really having heart palpitations about decorating and shopping? I mean, really, just say those things aloud to realize how ridiculous that is. We all just need to chill the f*#% out. Stop and breathe, people. It defeats the purpose of the season to run around crazy and focused on shopping. Nothing kills the joy of the season like being at the mall. This is the time for love and joy and warmth and generosity. It sounds cliché, but I think we’ve all lost our ever loving minds and forgotten the reason for the season.  I’m pretty sure a car decked out in Rudolph regalia with Jesus and church bumper stickers festooning the back shouldn’t have a driver flippiing someone the bird while trying to wedge into a too small parking space. The mall parking lot seems to be an apropos metaphor for the holiday season, and that’s just a pathetic testament to humanity in consumerist America.

The Ewens are taking it easy this holiday season. We’ve rented a lovely cabin with a pristine mountain view in Western North Carolina. All of our holiday trappings are locked in a storage unit off a non-descript strip malled road. We bought $1 stockings and adorned them with yarn initials. The fake tree was on clearance at Rite Aid, a vast departure from the nine foot frazier fit we usually get. We’ve loaded the tree with colored lights rather than the more toned down white lights we would have had at home. The ornaments are origami Santas and pipe cleaner candy canes. There are fewer presents under the tree, but each and every one came from the heart. We made a concerted effort to give more to others than to ourselves. The truth is, we want for nothing.

And here in our mountaintop getaway, we realize just how fortunate we are to live in the embrace of peace, love, and joy. Even among the the bickering din of brothers, we count our blessings and grateful for our health and each other. That’s what the holidays are about. We don’t really need a curmudgeon like me to remind us of this, do we?
