Vote AGAINST Amendment One and Keep the Bible Out of the Constitution

Ilinap · May 7, 2012 ·

All is not equal in the state of North Carolina. If Mitt Romney orders new address labels stamped with 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we are facing even bigger crimes against equality. I cannot believe we are STILL fighting for equal rights in this country in this century. Land of the free, my ass.

We have a pastor advocating HITTING children who display “effeminate or butch” tendencies. Scratch that, he PREACHED about it. This monster used his power as a man of God and stood at the pulpit telling his congregation to abuse children.

We have an elected legislator who supports Amendment One because he sees it as a means to protect the Caucasian race. His wife remarked, “The reason my husband wrote Amendment 1 was because the Caucasian race is diminishing and we need to uh, reproduce.” That sound you just heard…was my head rolling off my neck.

This is madness.

All sorts of folks, Bible toting and otherwise, have their bloomers in a bundle about protecting the “sanctity of marriage” and blah blah blah. I wonder how many of those people are divorced or adulterers. Should we go ahead and make divorce and adultery felonies? Hypocrisy abounds, especially in matters of religion. Note that religion, faith, and spirituality are not synonymous. True people of faith do not judge those who are different. They embrace the weak, the hungry, the disenfranchised, the vulnerable, the hurting, the underdogs. True people of faith have no agenda or ulterior motives. True people of faith are not guided by bigotry and driven by judgement. True people of faith are fueled by love, not hate.

In North Carolina our citizens will be at the polls tomorrow. We are voting on Amendment One, which will ban gay marriage in our state constitution. For the record, gay marriage is already against the law in North Carolina. House Speaker Thom Tillis, a key supporter of the Amendment has stated publicly that he thinks it will be overturned in 20 years by the next generation anyway. So we are wasting time, money, and energy on this because…? Way to be responsible and represent citizens of North Carolina, Mr. Speaker! And what about the notion of small government? What our Republican state leaders (I use this word loosely.) advocate for is a government so small it fits not just in your bedroom, but in my uterus!

Let me be clear, I do not care how people pray or show their faith; I fully support whatever people want to believe and embrace friends of many faith backgrounds. Amendment One is not a religious issue (unless you make it so PERSONALLY). I do NOT think the Bible has a place in my constitution. No religious text or teachings belong in government. Period. No one takes away one’s right to follow one’s beliefs if Amendment One is voted down. Go ahead and be Judy McJudgy if you want to be. Go ahead and wax about the “sin.” No one is stopping you because we have the FREEDOM to believe and say what we want. The whole point of an AMENDMENT is to PROTECT rights and CITIZENS, not push forward a conservative Christian agenda. This is a fundamental principal of America’s liberty. If we intertwine government and religion (Christianity), we are no different than Sharia.

Listen to my evangelical Christian friend Jimmy Chalmers talking about why he’s voting against Amendment One.

I try very hard — because I’m Canadian — to keep mum about American politics. Especially on twitter — twitter is a dangerous place in an election year. Nonetheless, I love this post. From the outside, it’s hard to remember that many, many Americans are passionate, progressive and politically astute. It’s heartening. Personally I support minority rights in my country and in others.
