LEGO KidsFest!

Ilinap · September 13, 2011 ·

If you know anything about me, you know that I love LEGO. I’m not one to play cars or cops or cowboys but I’ll happily sit down and build creations long after my sons have tired and gone off to play something else. Our spring break to LEGOLAND was for me as much as it was for them. I can’t wait to check out the new one in Florida!

Well, until that time comes, the next best thing is coming to my little patch of sun here in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The LEGO KidsFest national tour stops at the Raleigh Convention Center October 7 – 9, 2011. Bird and Deal squeed when I told them. I really shouldn’t have mentioned it so early because now they ask every weekend if we’re going to the LEGO thing. Funny how kids have no concept of time. The KidsFest will have three acres of LEGO goodness. That’s 20 times the size of my yard! And yes, I have a small yard; I live in the city, folks.
Here’s what you’re going to find there:
  • LEGO Model Gallery: 40 life-sized models made entirely from LEGO bricks
  • LEGO Master Builders: live demonstrations and activities from the crew who get paid to play
  • Creation Nation: build your own creation to add to a custom map of the U.S.
  • Mystery Mural: build a piece of a giant mural to help reveal the image
  • Race Ramps: build your own custom car, then race it down the ramp against friends and family
  • LEGO Games Arena: roll the dice to play LEGO board games
  • Construction Zones: creative free build, play and display areas
  • LEGO DUPLO®: younger visitors can explore imagination through building
  • LEGO Retail and KidsFest Marketplace: purchase LEGO merchandise and official KidsFest tour goods
  • Brick Pile: a gigantic pile full of LEGO bricks for creative play and enjoyment
  • Monochromatic Builds: bricks of a single color to foster group creativity
  • Brickscapes: fantastic displays that combine lots of LEGO and DUPLO setsLEGO Universe: become a custom LEGO Minifigure in this multiplayer online game

My friend Shan took her sons to the event in Minneapolis and immediately shot me a note upon her return telling me that I simply must take my boys too. I’ll take that as a ringing endorsement. I have been known to get a tub of LEGO bricks for Mother’s Day, so trust me when I tell you that this won’t be a typical kid fest where the parents stand around groaning at clown antics and weird fuzzy creatures in big headed costumes or are subjected to screeching kid tunes and the smell of cotton candy in the air. Well, the cotton isn’t so bad, but you get my drift.

In Raleigh there are five sessions – all identical – available for the October 7 – 9 tour stop. LEGO KidsFest tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for children and can be purchased online at www.LEGOKidsFest.com.
If you don’t live in the Raleigh area, you can still catch LEGO KidsFest 2011 tour stops in Cleveland (November 4-6) and Hartford (December 2-4). For detailed information, check out www.LEGOKidsFest.com.
I just so happen to have a pair of tickets to GIVEAWAY for the Friday session (October 7, 4pm-8:30pm). FREE, people. Just leave me a comment telling me who really wants the tickets, your inner child or your child. Ready, set, go! Winner to be chosen randomly and announced Friday, September 30.
Disclosure: I received free tickets to take my family to the event but was not otherwise compensated. Opinions are all my own.

Hey Ilina… I’m not sure if you saw this post on our blog. We are so excited about what LEGO is doing for the children of La Limonada: http://www.lemonadeinternational.org/2011/09/lego-awards-grant-to-athentikos-for-la-limonada-art-camp/.

And I would love to be included in the GIVEAWAY. It’s my inner child that really wants to go (but I know my daughter won’t argue).

Oh Wow! I just came across your blog today, and what an awesome giveaway to find! We live near Raleigh and I know my two boys would LOVE to go this! My 1 yr old just figured out how to work Legos so he’s joined his brother’s obsession!

Even though Legos can take over my house, I am so thrilled by all the learning and development benefits that they provide. Legos are good for anyone, and enhance a child’s brain and growth development. Legos provide my kids with hours of play. They have so much fun building structures and acting out all kinds of battles and scenarios with the little Lego people. What could be better? I see LEGO Kidsfest as a huge inspiration.

We would love to be included in the GIVEAWAY!

What an AWESOME event this is going to be! J is all about Legos these days. It is one of his passions. Miraculously, it is one of the few activities that he and his sister will do together and GET ALONG WELL! Baby sister also gets in on the action – so a family event most definitely. Please include us in the giveaway. It will be a thrill to attend.

My son loves LEGOS. He plays with them every day and my daughter has finally realized that she needs to play with them too if she wants to spend time with him. She has enjoyed it too. We went to the LegoPalooza event in Chapel Hill this spring and are looking forward to this as well!

My sons M. and C would drown themselves in Legos if I allowed it. We obviously must not have enough of them because I have yet to step on the tiny evil ones in the middle of the night. I love Legos for the hours of time they can keep the boys occupied.

Best things about Legos for the boys?
The oldest wants to be an architect one day (he’s almost 8).
The youngest has fine motor control issues and legos are awesome at helping with that.

I would love to have the tix to go as M has discovered LegoLand online and keeps asking about it. Can you save me a trip to Florida? 🙂

I’m sure Junius thinks he wants the tickets most. But he doesn’t know how many years I spent sorting and building LEGOs with his Uncle Michael when we were kids. Excited to go!

Let’s put this another way… I’m not getting out of this, no matter what I do. The lovely LEGO people sent us a few gigantic postcards, which the boy has carefully collected in a pile of “dreams.” (said pile also includes that latest Chasing Fireflies catalog — gah)

So… if my number is picked, we’ll gladly accept. Heaven knows we’ll appreciate it. 🙂

We have Glenn’s sister and family coming that weekend. Our nephew is a LEGOmaniac. (And its one of the few toys I can play with my kids without regard for time) So, this inner child is screaming to take the real ones at our house.

I’m spending ALL the family disposable income that weekend to FLY to a vintage motorcycle rally, show and races in Alabama, leaving my family short on cash.

My inner child recognizes that providing tickets to this event would be a welcome consolation to the wife and child I’m leaving behind that weekend.

Beyond that, Legos are a go-to entertainment item in our house, our son loves them. Kirsten and I love them because without them, we’d field many more requests for TV time.

I have an 11-yr old girl who has recently developed a love of all things LEGO. This would be the end-all, get-all for her, and I would LOVE to surprise her with it.

How awesome! We are large lego fans here- especially my son who wants every set of Star Wars Legos ever made! This would be a perfect chance for my son and his always working daddy to spend some quality time together!

My son loves, loves, loves legos. We went to Legoland in San Diego, too. We both loved our two days of fun there. He would be ecstatic to go to the Lego fest here in Raleigh!
