Gin & Tonic – 5:00 Fridays

by Ilinap on September 3, 2010

I’m Indian. As in dot, not feather, as the decidedly un-PC jokesters say. Back in the day I played Pocahontas in a grade school play because I was A) Indian and B) the only brown girl in my class. I’m used to this un-PC way of life. I even find it ever-so-amusing time to time. I’ve been to Bombay. But I’m not from Bombay. Hell, Bombay isn’t even called Bombay anymore. It’s Mumbai now, just in case you’re wondering. The closest tie I have to Bombay now is by way of gin.

As some of you might know, Deal started kindergarten this week. I’ve been a wreck. He’s been a sad sack. Mac Daddy has shouldered the mood swings of this family. Bird has leashed out to make himself known. We’ve all been taking deep breaths.

I feel like I need a tonic to soothe my tender soul this week. I need to stop looking back at summer longingly and shift my gaze to fall’s gifts. I’ll be celebrating this Labor Day weekend with a tonic to recharge and refocus. It just so happens that by tonic, I mean the quinine variety.

Two Boys Tonic

2 ounces Bombay Saphhire gin

3 ounces tonic

splash of Bitter Lemon soda

Lime wedge

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add gin, tonic, and splash of Bitter Lemon soda. Squeeze in juice from one lime wedge and drop into drink.

Find a shady spot. Chill out. Sip. Breathe. Repeat.

And for the record, the Brits in British colonial India created the gin and tonic. How’s that for a cocktail party conversation starter?

Random food geek trivia: The gin was added to the tonic to cover the bitter taste of quinine the Brits were taking to treat and prevent malaria.

Or, as my friend Lynne would say, “I’ll have a GIN and tonic,” with the words “and tonic” uttered sotto voce!
